An Introduction to District Heating Systems
I have a question: Let's say there is a road that connects two towns cuts through another (third) town. Since it cuts through a town, it not ideal to leave it as a road (prioritize vehicle movement). At the same time it's difficult to go for a road diet and turn it into a street (which prioritize active modes). How can we solve this situation without building a new bypass road for through traffic? Has it been done somewhere? Appreciate your input.
It reminds me of some of the Boros in NYC, only cleaner and wealthier..
The reason American cities have so much sprawl and suburbs, is because American cities have experienced the fastest growth in history, I mean places like Las Vegas (a place that hasn’t even been around for 100 years) has the same population as Paris (a place that has been around for thousands of years) American cities can’t focus on density and nice architecture because they are constantly growing, when you look at the cities that are still growing but at a slow rate, the housing they get are more dense and walkable, even with some cities that are growing fast like OKC they can make some walkable almost European neighborhoods like the wheeler district, but this can’t be for the whole city, because of their fast growth they can only make these suburbs. I mean look at Dubai, it has grown insanely fast so it had to resort to the same suburbs and sprawl as American cities. The people who bash American cities for the suburbs are the people who don’t understand how fast these cities grew, If you look at cities that have grown slowly in America they are usually a lot more walkable, more dense, and have better architecture. I’ll give some examples St. Augustine, Guthrie, and Leavenworth. All walkable dense towns with beautiful architecture. Do to this fast growth rate American cities can’t make nice architecture and dense neighborhoods, in result they have to make the fastest method of housing, suburbs.
Greater LA has a population density of 200/km2? California is at 100/km2. Is someone asserting that LA is only twice as densely populated as the entire state? I think the stat is missing a zero. should be around 2000/km2
Nothing deterministic about what people CHOOSE to do. Only the physical constraints imposed by the consequences of those choices are scientifically proven and deterministic. Those people in power can and WILL choose maintaining existing existing infrastructure as people get pissed off more.
That's easy. People are lazy and stupid!
Amazing video
I will admit that I like that you broaden the idea of redesigning major roads for a more bike and pedestrian friendly mode of transportation, in the USA or otherwise. In the video you breifly mention how biking could have their own signal - which is fine, especially if you have either dangerous traffic or a lot of bikes/pedestrians. An alternative, that I have found that I enjoy more (as a bike-user, here in Denmark) is to make lights green for bikes and pedestrians for a few seconds before allowing other traffic. The benefit is that cars easily become aware that there are bikes, and that they should pay attention.
My uncle and cousins live in Appleton. Neat to see it being covered.
I immediately noticed the American way of looking at the intersections in a city like this would be shaped. As a Belgian, before I started the video, my first thoughts were on how perfect these three way crossings would be for roundabouts with wide angle connections. Perfect for wide bicycle paths around them. But no, a stoplight was mentioned in the first 60 sections of this video 😁😁
this should be a series.

Hello If you think that India is not getting planned cities but it's not The India you were awere of Checkout new videos on India our Country India is superpass the country which use to rule us in terms of cities and new morde infrastructure you can check there are so many cities which are ready And so many are about to ready India is now shaping itself very smartly and wisely. One day there will be a time when you will be want to visit India onec in your lifetime. Jai Hind Jai Bharat 🇮🇳
Loved this video! What would you do with something like 25th Ave NE (near NE 55th st intersection) in Seattle? It's basically Memorial Dr except it has parking on either east or west that flips morning/afternoon with commutes.
Squaring company made rectangular things.
Perhaps the worst example is the DC area, where developers are continually building brand new subdivisions in rural areas which will have 1-2 small entry roads connected to a highway.
6:34 Well, for starters, remove the intersection entirely by making it level separated, the traffic will flow much better. And bury the damned power lines...
Of course you should underground the power lines in cities and stop looking like a third world country...
This would make stroads a little more pleasant and safer, but not by a whole lot. You still have high speed traffic next to people and bikes all trying to go to spread out places set far back from the road. Those setbacks are a curse that could become a blessing. Businesses do care about pedestrians, once they get out of their car in their parking lot and need to make their way into their building. Buildings tend to have nice sidewalks in front, maybe with even some shade or other amenities. The problem is, most businesses will not make any connection to the neighboring lots. Cars are rarely allowed to drive directly between adjacent lots without going back out onto the road, and if there is no path for a car, there is probably also no reasonable path for a pedestrian. So, the setback design has a built in solution for more walkability. Encourage or force businesses to build pedestrian paths that connect from the sidewalks already in front of their buildings to those of the buildings next door. You can now walk in a more pleasant environment, close to very low speed traffic. Zoning changes, building codes, low interest loans, tax incentives, changes to liability laws. or even amicable eminent domain can all work to encourage this at a low cost to the tax payer, and with the possibility of more business for the property owners. Even more can be done with the underutilized space in the setback, like protected stopping bays for buses, multi use paths, park like areas, or building shared multi-level car parks which free up land for more businesses and housing that is also more walkable and so could operate with fewer total spaces taking less area.
I think my hometown of Chippewa Falls has more bike infrastructure than Appleton, based on this video. Perhaps we rely on tourism here and the image of a nice little town and therefore work towards pedestrian-friendliness. There are definitely some challenging streets though, in part due to Seymour Cray Sr's one-ways. Also the tourists can't figure out where to stop sometimes.
I use Streetmix all the time!!
Love this concept for a video!
How to make people feel uncomfortable example 1
Stroads came about because of all this "keep traffic flowing and reduce emissions". I dont believe in that Right turns on red also came about because of that It is high time the government told the environmentalists to go to hell If DeSantis should replace Trump at the top of the ticket and becime president he has made it clear he will put this environmental bs "in the trash where it belongs" Environmentalists will hold no sway in a DeSantis administration
you are awesome
In Croatia yes
In my younger years I worked all over the US with a roofing crew. Travelling in 2003 from Chicago, where we had a great time, to Cleveland, where we had an even better time, we made the mistake of stopping at a Subway in Gary. I knew it was a shithole when the shop had a glass screen with a roll out drawer where you put your cash and received your sandwich. There were steel shutters on each window and cameras in every corner like a high security bank but for sandwiches. Most cities have some redeeming qualities, Gary has none. It's a shithole.
Wouldn't need the sprawl if you stopped those outsiders who hate you from breaking in.
Ya
Instead of 2Think of the children", you video lacks the most important one "Think of the Dodge RAMs" ... They desire those wirde stroads designed to be Dodge RAM (and F150_ friendly while scaring away them pesky cyclist and pedestrains 🙂 And these F150s vote so elected officials in a city have to consider that. Was recently at a local "urbanism" meeting with city. They asked the citizen tables to discuss what to do withour Stroad, St-Jean Boulevard. The folks at our table wre absolutely opposed to the concept of reducing it from 3 lanes down to 2. When they widened the road to 3 lanes in each direction, they ended up with street, narrow sideaalk and right at edge, a fence to the actual properties beyond. No space for trees, nothing. Not discussed in yoru video is the (politically risky) jmove to get people out of cars and onto bikes and feet or use public transit. This will reduce the traffic counts on the stroad and allow it to be transformed. Transforming it first will help nudge people away from ther F150s and Dodge RAMs.
When I was staying in Kanata, a suburb of Ottawa for my co-op job, it was an older suburb of the 1970s, but at least there was a park with good trail access to different parts of the neighborhood, a short path that allowed pedestrian access to the main road, and a small plaza with a convenience store and restaurants accessed by the aforementioned park trails from my house. More suburbs should have this.
Thanks for tipping me off to Streetmix
Untrue! Venice has 42000 permanent residents at last count.
“I’m old. But even I wasn’t born in 1980.” Yeah just gonna close out the video and unsubscribe right there.
Commercial districts, “stroads” as you pejoratively call them, are beautiful, iconic and unique to American culture and history. They don’t need any fancy woke redesigns. If you want to live in Europe then you need to go live in Europe. 🤷♂️
I showed this to my partner. He got to 0:13 before he exclaimed, "Oh! I know exactly where that is!" lol 1:00 "Oh! I love this place! I've spent hundreds of hours there watching birds! Badger, I want to go there!" lol

My wife & I did a two day trip to Venice in June 2024. It was a complete circus. A parade of hundreds of tourists walking aimlessly in the Venetian streets or taking extortionate boat & gondola rides, meals and souvenirs not to mention the overpriced tickets to visit the monuments after queueing for hours. Totally not worth the hype.
And why would americans use those bike paths when distances are that big anyway?
Are traffic counts bi-directional? E.g. adding east and west bound traffic?
I don't understand the first example. It seems you just conjured new width out of nowhere for the multi-use path. Nothing else shrinks. The lanes do shrink visually but the numbers don't change.
Having driven on that street, I agree. It was not designed for humans.
